Light showers started early Friday afternoon in parts of metro Atlanta and could continue through the evening, but changes are coming.

Rain arrived in Cobb and Fulton counties about 4 p.m., according to Channel 2 Action News. That has brought milder temperatures. Currently, it’s 80 degrees in Atlanta — a 10-degree difference from Thursday, Channel 2 Chief meteorologist Glenn Burns said.

The high Friday was 85 degrees in Atlanta.

And temps could get lower, and more comfortable, with a burgeoning cold front expected to arrive late Friday.

“This cold front is bringing us big changes,” Channel 2 meteorologist Katie Walls said.

Showers are forecast for North Georgia and the metro area overnight as the cold front nears, but downpours — storms are not expected to be severe — should be clear by about noon Saturday, when there is a 20 percent chance of rain, Channel 2 reported. Winds could reach 25 mph Saturday afternoon.

“It could be breezy for area lakes,” Burns said.

Sunny skies should return, but don’t expect temperatures to re-enter the 90s for the foreseeable future, Burns said. The expected high Saturday and Sunday is 87 degrees, with much lower humidity than we’ve experienced in recent days.

The average high for July 29 is 89.

“It will be vastly more comfortable,” Walls said.

Expect morning temperatures in the low 70s Saturday, and they could dip into the high 60s Sunday and Monday in Atlanta. In fact, the forecast for Sunday morning calls for lows of 57 degrees in Blairsville and 61 in Ellijay.

“We’re heading into a dry spell,” Walls said. The next chance of rain is not until Wednesday.
