Harrah's Cherokee is winding down a five-year, $633 million expansion plan.

The Harrah's Cherokee casino, which is open 24-7 for guests 21 or older, has upped the ante on gaming space, doubling in size.

Slots line the Essence Lounge area inside Harrah's Cherokee.

The River Shops, a series of five stores including a sweet shop, opened in June.

The expansion at Harrah's Cherokee created a total of 150,000 square feet, including 4,000 slots.

Cozy seating areas with plush upholstery surround fireplaces, reflecting the mountain setting of Harrah's Cherokee.

The $650 million expansion has added more glamour to the western North Carolina destination.

With the addition of the 21-story Creek Tower, Harrah's Cherokee now has 1,108 hotel rooms.

The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad offers daily excursions to spots such as the Nantahala Gorge and Nantahala Outdoor Center, and historic Dillsboro, N.C. -- Text by Lori Johnston
