Six things to know about Gerardo Martino, who will manage Atlanta United FC in Major League Soccer.

Gerardo Martino played for Newell’s Old Boys, making more than 500 appearances for the Argentinian-based club. He also played for Tenerife, Lanus, O’Higgins and Barcelona SC.

Gerardo Martino has managed two national teams: Paraguay and Argentina. He led Paraguay to the quarterfinals of the 2010 World Cup, and the finals of the 2011 Copa America. He led Argentina to the finals of Copa America in 2015 and 2016, losing to Chile in the finals of both tournaments.

Gerardo Martino managed Barcelona in the 2013-14 season. They were nipped by Atletico Madrid on the season’s final day for the La Liga Title. The team won its group in the Champions League. They defeated Manchester City in the Round of 16, but were knocked out in the quarterfinals by Atletico Madrid.

A tie between Gerardo Martino and Atlanta United runs through Tottenham Hotspur. Atlanta United President Darrel Eales worked for Spurs, where Mauricio Pochettino is the manager. Pochettino began his playing career at Newell’s when Martino was finishing his.
