In recent years, a number of highly rated college football quarterback prospects have transferred from the school they originally committed to attending.
Justin Fields, who is exploring transferring from Georgia after his freshman season, was the No. 2 player in the country coming out of Cobb's Harrison High School in 2018.
Here are some recent examples of players who transferred:
• Jacob Eason, Georgia - Eason appeared in 16 games for the Bulldogs over two seasons before losing his starting job to Jake Fromm in 2017. He transferred to Washington where he is expected to compete for a starting job next season.
• Phillip Sims, Alabama - As a redshirt sophomore, Sims split playing time with A.J. McCarron in 2011. He transferred to Virginia in 2012, appearing in 12 games. He transferred again in 2013 to Winston-Salem State.
• Jeff Driskel, Florida - A starter his sophomore season, Driskel led the Gators to the Sugar Bowl. He suffered and injury, missing a large portion of the 2013 season, before returning as a starter in 2014. He was unseated as a starter by Treon Harris and transferred to Louisiana Tech.
• Gunner Kiel, Notre Dame - After spending a season in the crowded Fighting Irish quarterback depth chart, Kiel transferred to Cincinnati in 2013 where he played in 28 games and came within 20 yards of setting the school's single-season passing record.
• Kyle Allen, Texas A&M - A two-year starter with the Aggies, Allen sat out a year after he transferred to Houston where he began the 2017 season as the starter.
• Kyler Murray, Texas A&M - Murray appeared in a handful of games as a backup to Kyle Allen in 2015. He transferred to Oklahoma where he was a backup to Baker Mayfield before winning the Heisman Trophy as the Sooners staring quarterback in 2018.
• Blake Barnett, Alabama - Barnett began the 2016 season as the Crimson Tide's starting quarterback. He left the program soon after the first game as Jalen Hurts took over the starting job. Barnett transferred to Arizona State but appeared in just four games as a backup. He transferred again to South Florida where he played in 10 games in 2018.
• Shea Patterson, Ole Miss - Patterson was thrust into the starting role following an injury to Rebels starter Chad Kelly. After the 2017 season, Patterson opted to transfer to Michigan and led the Wolverines to 10 wins in 2018.
• Hunter Johnson, Clemson - A backup quarterback who appeared in a handful of games in 2017 transferred to Northwestern where he will be eligible to start in 2019.
