Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson has had plenty of encouraging words for his quarterbacks during spring practice. Wednesday, after the final practice before Friday’s spring game, was no different.

“I’ve said before that they’re the least of my worries, that position,” Johnson said of quarterbacks Matthew Jordan, TaQuon Marshall, Jay Jones and Lucas Johnson. “I think we’ve got some good players there.”

For Tech’s prospects in 2017, it’s an encouraging indicator, as the Yellow Jackets will have to replace three-year starter Justin Thomas with one of the four. Only Jordan has played a significant amount of snaps at quarterback. Marshall has played 14 snaps at quarterback. Jones and Johnson are redshirt freshmen.

“All four guys, I’d be good with any of them playing in a game,” Johnson said. “Sure would.”

Johnson has said previously that it’s probably the deepest position on the roster. The depth won’t be quite the same for the spring game, as Jordan is out with a foot injury. Johnson said that Marshall and Jones will quarterback the first-team offense and Johnson and walk-on Chase Martenson will run the second-team offense in the spring scrimmage.

Johnson said that Jones may not play due to an ankle injury suffered during Monday’s practice, which is why he is with the first-team offense.

“If Jay was full speed, we’d have Jay and Luke probably on the gold (second-team offense) team,” Johnson said.

In Wednesday’s practice, Lucas Johnson threw with the first-team offense in passing drills while Marshall threw with the second-team offense.

“So they’re all getting their reps and rolling in there,” Johnson said. “I’ve been pleased with all those guys.”
