Georgia Tech is a possible destination for Duke forward Sean Obi. According to the Twitter account for Obi’s high school basketball team, Maryland, Vanderbilt, SMU and Tech are in the mix for Obi, who is leaving Duke after two seasons. Obi has reportedly visited Maryland. He has not visited Tech.
As a freshman at Rice in the 2013-14 season, Obi averaged 11.4 points per game and led Conference USA in rebounding (9.3 rebounds per game) and ranked fourth in field-goal percentage (59.1 percent) before transferring to Duke. With the Blue Devils, because of a knee injury and the team’s assembly of talent, Obi played in only 10 games, all in his sophomore season.
Obi is on track to graduate from Duke at the end of the spring semester and can transfer with immediate eligibility for his final season. In a statement for the announcement of his transfer, Obi said that “I’m feeling great physically and I’m excited to take next step in my career.”
Obi, 6-foot-9 and 255 pounds, would give Tech depth in the frontcourt, where coach Josh Pastner’s only options after center Ben Lammers are Abdoulaye Gueye, who was developing at the time of a mid-season wrist injury, Sylvester Ogbonda and incoming freshman Moses Wright.
Tech has four scholarships to give for the 2017 class.
