Competition won’t faze friendships in Tech signing class

In the fall, some position groups in Georgia Tech’s 2017 signing class will experience more competition than others, but Norcross High School cornerback Dameon Williams knows competition won’t ruin the friendships the commits have made.

With two running backs, four defensive backs, four lineman and two linebackers, some signing classes would be tense thinking about earning playing time — but not the Yellow Jackets.

“We’re all really close and I think that we’re going to be really close (at Tech),” Williams said. “Football is a competitive sport and the coaches know that whoever is the best man, that’s who’s going to get the job and we know there’s no hard feelings because we’re there to play football. That’s what we’re there for.”

Although competition is inevitable, all 16 of Tech’s commits have bonded before competition begins through official visits, game days visits and a nonstop group text message that includes all 16 commits.

Future Tech offensive guard Connor Hansen has enjoyed getting to know fellow commits through the group text that he’s been a part of since he committed in June.

“I love (the signing class) and every kid I’ve talked to,” Hansen said. “Every kid in my (signing) class, I’ve talked to them if they’re committed and all of them are nice kids. I’ve met a few of them on official visits and game days.”

After graduation in May, Hansen, Williams and the 12 other commits will finally come together as they enroll in Tech and join defensive backs Jaytlin Askew and Gentry Bonds who enrolled in January.
