After leading Georgia Tech to a spot in the TaxSlayer Bowl, coach Paul Johnson will have an extra $100,000 coming to him as a bonus.

Johnson’s contract, extended at the end of the 2014 season through 2020, has a clause that calls for him to earn that amount if Tech earns an invitation to one of the ACC’s four “Tier One” bowls – Belk, Pinstripe, Sun or TaxSlayer. He’ll receive another $75,000 if Tech beats Kentucky Dec. 31 in Jacksonville, Fla.

Johnson has also earned both academic bonuses in his contract, which awards him an extra $125,000 if the team achieves a graduation success rate (as measured by the NCAA) of 70 percent or better and an extra $100,000 for an academic progress rate (another NCAA metric) score of 950 or better. Tech achieved a 78 percent GSR and a 987 on APR.

The total of $325,000 is 11 percent of the $2.9 million salary that he has earned this year.

The bowl trip also triggered bonuses for all of the assistant coaches equal to one month’s salary, a standard element of coaching contracts. Defensive coordinator Ted Roof will bring home roughly $62,500. (Roof was scheduled to receive $750,000 annually when he signed his extension in Feb. 2015, but was able to receive raises in subsequent seasons.) He also earned an extra $20,000 for finishing in the top five in the ACC – league games only – in red-zone defense and takeaways. His contract calls for him to earn $10,000 for a top-five finish in one of five statistical categories. The other three are scoring defense, total defense and third-down defense.

The other seven position coaches will receive bonuses ranging from $16,945 to $20,198.
