Recent Braves' rookie midseason debut

Braves prospect Tommy La Stella made his rookie debut Wednesday in Boston. Here's a look at how other recent mid-season callups performed in their first start.

The Atlanta Braves called up second baseman Tommy La Stella Wednesday, May 28, 2012, making his major league debut in Boston. La Stella had 2 hits in 4 at-bats in his major league debut for the Braves. In the infield he posted 6 putouts and 2 assists.

Former Georgia Bulldog Alex Wood made his hometown debut May 30, 2013, in relief in the ninth inning against the Toronto Blue Jays. Wood made his first major league start June 18, allowing 1 run in a loss. Wood started out this season on the Braves' starting rotation.

Braves called up shortstop Andrelton Simmons on May 30, 2012, from Double-A Mississippi. Simmons made his debut June 2 against the Nationals in Washington, where he went 0-for-3. He began the 2013 season as the team's shortstop.

Reliever Craig Kimbrel made his major league debut on May 7, 2010, following his call up from Triple-A Gwinnett. Kimbrel faced 4 batters, striking out 2 in relief of Johnny Venters in the seventh inning. Kimbrel is now the Braves' closer and is two games away from breaking John Smoltz's franchise record for total saves.

Pitcher Kris Medlen made his major league debut May 21, 2009.

Tommy Hanson was called up midseason in 2009. Hanson made his major league debut June 7, 2009, against the Milwaukee Brewers, pitching 6 innings and allowing 7 runs and 1 walk, with 5 strikeouts. Hanson made 20 more starts that season, earning an 11-4 record and 2.89 ERA, along with Rookie of the Year consideration.
