Atlanta United may be trading for D.C. United centerback Bobby Boswell, according to Washington Post’s Steven Goff. Atlanta United hasn’t responded to a message left asking about the trade.

Boswell, 34, would give Atlanta United more depth on defense. Michael Parkhurst and Leandro Gonzalez Pirez have started all 22 league games at centerback this season. Anton Walkes, on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, has moved from centerback to right fullback and Miles Robinson, the No. 2 pick in the SuperDraft, has yet to appear in a league game. The team also has Zach Loyd, but he has yet to appear in a league game.

Atlanta United's roster is full. A player would have to be traded or released to add Boswell.

There are several players on the roster who have yet to make an impact. The team has a glut of central midfielders, for example.

Boswell has spent his career in MLS, playing at D.C. United from 2005-07, Houston from 2008-13, and D.C. United again 2014-current. He has 365 appearances, including 360 starts. He has played in two MLS Cups. He has a salary of $260,000 this season.

Adding depth will be critical for Atlanta United, which is in fifth place in the Eastern Conference and facing a glut of games in September.

Starting with the Sept. 10 game against Dallas that will open Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the team will play seven games (for a maximum of 21 points) in 20 days. Six of those games will be at home.

Atlanta United’s next game is at D.C. United on Aug. 23.
