Hurricane Michael, one of the biggest storms to ever hit the Florida Panhandle, has officially made landfall.

The center of the eye of the storm hit land Wednesday afternoon near Mexico Beach on the Florida Panhandle, just east of Panama City Beach, according to The National Weather Service.

On Wednesday morning, Michael was upgraded to a Category 4 storm, and it is set to bring heavy winds and potentially catastrophic storm surges to parts of the Gulf Coast and southwest Georgia, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The massive storm, which is nearly twice the size of Georgia, is churning north at 14 mph with sustained winds of 155 mph at its center, the Hurricane Center reported.
