Federal officials are investigating a plane crash that killed four people Saturday afternoon.

The Murray County Sheriff's Office confirmed the twin-engine plane crashed Saturday near Piney Hill Road and Old Highway 411 in Ramhurst about 4:45 p.m..

Ramhurst is about 85 miles north of Atlanta.

The flight originated in Tennessee and all four people, two men and two women, died in the crash, according to the Chattanooga Times Free Press.

The sheriff and witnesses said there was heavy rain before the crash.

Murray County Sheriff Gary Langford told the Times he believes the Piper PA-23 disintegrated in the air.

April Edwards told a local television station she saw the plane go down.

"I just looked up in the sky and saw a plane, it didn't look like a plane at the time, but it just caught on fire and there was smoke everywhere and debris started flying and it hit the ground," Edwards told WTVC. "It was bad."
