Wireless internet access in downtown McDonough as well as four of the city’s parks has improved greatly, according to a technology company tasked with overseeing the expansion of the city’s systems. A new 5G fixed wireless network that capitalized on existing fiber availability in some areas offers increased flexibility and is a money-saver for the city, which no longer has to install “leased lines” from the phone or cable company to connect government and city-owned facilities, officials said.

The new system also reportedly increased bandwidth speeds and added new services to newly connected offices downtown which previously used lower-speed connectivity. The city is now evaluating a possible extension of the system to the west side of I-75.
