Kennesaw State’s Olens to speak at Marietta anti-sex trafficking event

Some in Marietta are coming together to discuss a nearly unthinkable scourge that affects communities of all types throughout metro Atlanta.

The “Because Children are Priceless” discussion will be Thursday at 7 p.m. It’s a two-part event, with a number of law enforcement and victims’ advocacy agencies, along with a panel discussion led by experts.

The program will be hosted by the East Cobb Consortium for Ending Child Slavery and held at Etz Chaim Synagogue, 1190 Indian Hills Parkway.

There will be representatives from the Georgia Bureau of Investigators, Georgia Cares, Out of Darkness, Rescuing Hope, Street Grace and Wellspring Living.

Other panelists include prosecutor Camila Wright and former attorney general Sam Olens.

Olens, new Kennesaw State University president, said he got involved with fighting sex trafficking early on as the state's top prosecutor after a presentation by Shared Hope International.

"This is a topic that I feel very passionate about and and proud of the work that we have done in this area,” he said in a statement.

In 2011, he and others helped pass a bill discouraging sex trafficking and helping victims' programs.

“While we may not be able to save all of the victims of this horrendous crime, every one that we can save is a great accomplishment,” he wrote.
