Candidates to become Stonecrest’s first mayor and City Council members are filing to run for office this week.

Qualifying for the March 21 election is being held from Monday to Wednesday.

Already, 11 candidates had signed up for the election as of midday Monday.

Voters in November approved creating the city of Stonecrest, located near Lithonia and I-20 in southeast DeKalb County. The city will have 50,000 residents, five city council districts and a mayor.

Residents of the area can qualify for municipal office at the DeKalb County Voter Registration & Election Office from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through Wednesday. It costs $600 to run for mayor and $450 to run for City Council.
