Atlanta Public Schools will be closed Monday, but the nine-member school board will still be sworn in.

The Atlanta Board of Education did cancel later meetings it had planned to hold on Monday, including a 3 p.m. work session to review presentations and a 6 p.m. community meeting to be followed by legislative action on various matters.

The school board, however, still will meet at 2:30 p.m. Monday to swear in its nine members and to choose new officers, including a chairman. That meeting will take place at the school district’s downtown headquarters. The district did not immediately announce when they would reschedule the postponed meetings.

The district, like other metro Atlanta school systems, cited weather forecasts and road conditions as the reason for its Monday closure.

APS also cautioned that traffic is expected to be heavy Monday because of the college football championship game and the visit from President Donald Trump, who is coming to Atlanta to watch Georgia play Alabama.

In 2022, Georgia Power projected its winter peak electricity demand would grow by about 400 megawatts by 2031. Since then, Georgia has experienced a boom of data centers, which require a large load of electricty to run, and Georgia Power's recent forecast shows peak demand growing by 20 times the 400-megawatt estimate from just three years ago.
