An eighth grade social studies teacher at Sylvan Hills Middle School has been named the Atlanta Public Schools’ Teacher of the Year.

The district-wide honor was awarded to Mahoganey Jackson on Wednesday. Jackson has been a teacher for nine years.

Jackson was selected as this year's winner from a field of finalists that included

Jennifer Lockwood, a third grade teacher at Springdale Park Elementary, and Larry Alford, who teaches culinary arts and is the department chair for career, technical, and agricultural education; art; world language; and physical education at Crim Open Campus.

The teacher award was announced during an awards ceremony  at the Woodruff Arts Center.

The two suspects are scheduled to appear in court Wednesday.
