Three children were in critical condition Friday evening after a motorist involved in an earlier accident lost control of a vehicle and hit them, Atlanta police said.

About 6:59 p.m., the driver struck another vehicle, lost control and struck the children as they walked on a sidewalk along Joseph E. Boone Boulevard and Mayson Turner Road, police spokesman Donald T. Hannah said.

It was not clear what led to the initial accident.

“It’s an open investigation,” Hannah told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “All the details as it relates to anything that led up to the accident aren’t available right now.”

The ages of the injured children were not known.

“Right now, all we know is that the three children were critical when they were transported to Grady [Memorial Hospital],” he said.

The driver remained on the scene and was cooperating with investigators, Hannah said.
