A man suspected of putting a suspicious bag in the hand of former President Jimmy Carter’s statue at the Georgia Capitol has been arrested.

Jamon Maurice Williams, 36, was arrested Friday on three counts of interference with government property, Capitol police said.

Police got a call March 13 about suspicious items on the grounds, Atlanta fire Sgt. Cortez Stafford said.

Several bags were found in the hands of Carter’s statue and around the capitol. An Atlanta bomb squad and hazmat team were called to the scene but determined there was no danger.

The investigation led to closed roads and postponed a meeting of the Senate Appropriations Committee.

Williams was taken to the Fulton County jail.

This isn’t the first time Williams was accused of leaving suspicious packages on property.

On Feb. 28, MARTA officials said he boarded an eastbound train at the Georgia State station and placed a suspicious package on the train car.

“A train patrol unit cleared the car and (police) dogs responded and declared the scene safe,” MARTA spokesman Erik Burton said.

Williams was later identified as the suspect and charged with terrorist threats.
