A child was ejected from a car Monday afternoon during a crash involving a Cobb County police officer, the Georgia State Patrol said.
The 2-year-old was in a car seat but unrestrained in an SUV when it spun out of control after being hit by the patrol car, GSP officials told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Authorities said the Nissan Pathfinder was turning left from Whisper Lane onto Riverside Parkway when a Cobb County Transit bus obscured its view. The vehicle failed to yield and was hit by the officer’s car.
The driver of the Pathfinder, Maria E. Bonilla, was charged with failure to yield and child restraint violation, the GSP said Tuesday.
Officials said the rear driver-side door was broken on impact as the SUV began rotating in a counter-clockwise direction.
The toddler was in a forward-facing car seat in the back seat of the Nissan but wasn’t properly secured, according to the GSP.
“The seat was not restrained properly … and the child was apparently not restrained at all,” officials said. “The child was ejected through the window during the vehicle’s rotation.”
GSP said the child suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
