APS, Atlanta police investigating attack on gay students at Carver

Atlanta Public Schools and Atlanta police are investigating whether two students at Carver School of Technology were beaten up by a group of other students because they are gay.

The two boys, 17 and 16 years old, were jumped and punched after school Monday afternoon by 15 to 20 other boys who made homophobic slurs, according to a witness account in the police report.

The 17-year-old told police he and his friend were attacked “because they were gay,” according to the report.

Both boys were taken to the hospital for treatment. The older boy suffered a bloody mouth, loose teeth and head injuries, according to the report. The younger boy suffered a gash under his right eye which he said was caused by a screw driver someone used to cut him.

In a statement, APS said: “Atlanta Public Schools is aware of the incident in question on the New Schools of Carver campus and are taking the reports very seriously. Our top priority is the safety and security of our students and staff. Atlanta Public Schools Office of Safety and Security and the Atlanta Police Department are actively investigating the events, including meeting with the students involved, their parents and the staff on campus to gather the facts. Once the facts are determined, the district will proceed with the appropriate support and disciplinary actions.”
