PHOTOS: Marietta dream home emerges after flooding

A water main break in Cobb County leads to renovations for couple's new home.

The white columns add a touch of Southern charm to Doug and Julie Minton's 2,587 square feet, four bedrooms, 2 1/2 bath Marietta home.

A trio of mirrors stand out against the walls, painted Sherwin-Williams Sea Salt (at 50 percent strength), in the living room. The largest mirror is from Hobby Lobby, and the two smaller ones are from Target, but Julie Minton stained all three to match and add warmth to the room.

Soft neutral tones mixed with darker woods gives the living room the cozy feel Julie Minton desired. An ivory shag rug by Safavieh California from the Home Depot matches curtains from Target, while throws and pillows add more softness to the chairs from World Market.

Julie Minton made the industrial floating shelves in the upstairs bonus room with supplies from Lowe's. She combined farmhouse chic style with sporty touches.

As an interior decorator, Julie Minton has created numerous gallery walls. She said was excited to create one in her home office and carefully chose pieces in various shapes and sizes. She made the arrow, found the mirror and basket at a farmer's market in North Carolina, and included quotes that inspired her as she began her business, Simply Beautiful.

Julie Minton freshened up secondhand bookshelves with paint and paired them with a darker desk by Ameriwood Home from Target and a nailhead trim desk chair from HomeGoods. She and husband Doug made the side table from reclaimed wood and pipes, designing it to go with the desk.

Plush tufted chairs from Target's Threshold line surround the dining room table. The walls are painted Sherwin-Williams Silver Strand (at 50 percent strength), and the glass bell chandelier by Jojo Springs was bought on Amazon. The rug is from Ballard Designs.

White glossy ceramic tile from Moda Floors & Interiors is one to the kitchen, which Carlton Kitchen and Bath gutted following a water main break. Whirlpool appliances from Lowe's, new hardware, a pendant light by Alcott Hill from Wayfair, and sconces by Allen + Roth from Lowe's are all new. The walls are painted Sherwin-Williams Frosty White, and the floors are white oak from Moda.

The kitchen table was a Craigslist find. It's one of the touches of wood the couple chose to add warmth, Julie Minton said. The pitcher filled with flowers adds an easy hint of farmhouse flair.

Minton made a pennant with her son's name on it, and crafted a sports-themed mobile from Christmas ornaments that hangs in the teepee. She also chose foam tiles that look like gray wood for the playroom flooring. "We spend so much of our day in here, so I wanted this space to be comfortable, fun and easy to clean," she said.

For the DIY headboard in the master bedroom, Julie Minton cut the shape out of plywood, then added two pieces of egg crate mattress pad, covered them with batting and stapled it on. Then she wrapped it with fabric and added nailhead trim for a more affordable custom headboard option. She paired it with bedding from HomeGoods. The walls are painted Sherwin-Williams Glimmer.

The beveled mirror is from Overstock.com, and the dresser is from Coaster Fine Furniture in the master bedroom. The corner chair from Target follows the same swooping lines of chairs in the living room.

Julie Minton said her old master bath was awkwardly laid out and cramped, so when a water main broke and damaged the space earlier this year, the couple created a better layout. The new room accommodates an oval freestanding tub from Signature Hardware. The glass bell pendant light is by Charlton Home from Wayfair, and the walls are painted Sherwin-Williams Frosty White.

Julie Minton's DIY projects include the tufted headboard in the guest bedroom. Geometric mirrors mimic the pattern on the bedding from West Elm, making for a stylish guest space.

A Craigslist find makes for a mini mudroom in the home. Julie Minton painted it and changed the hardware, and the couple cut out the front to hold wood bins they made.

A wet bar was not on the Mintons' must-have list, but since adding it under the stairs during the renovation they've ended up loving it.

Julie Minton said the nursery is one of her favorite rooms. Wood bookshelves by Alondra from Amazon, a weathered Fisher Price crib and a star collection fit the home's farmhouse style. "It was such a joy to create a calm and cozy space for sweet Jack to come home to," she said.

Cuddly stuffed animals and a piece from Etsy that quotes Isaiah 58:11 are displayed on shelves in the nursery.

Doug and Julie Minton worked with Archer Restoration Services, Moda Floors & Interiors, and Carlton Kitchen and Bath on renovations and repairs after a broken water main flooded their home earlier this year. They live in the four-bedroom, 2 1/2 bath home with son Jack and pets. Doug Minton is a finance manager at CP Kelco, and Julie Minton is an interior decorator who owns Simply Beautiful.
