Private Quarters: Designer's farmhouse chic home in Milton

Rachel Greathouse's 5,500-square-foot house is “not a typical traditional Georgia-style home,” she said. “We made an offer in two days.”

By removing a couple of doors, Rachel Greathouse opened up the space to create a mudroom for her family. She added the wall hooks and the bench to increase its functionality. The artwork was bought at an auction at the children's school.

A chest from Queen of Hearts Antiques and Interiors and a giant milk bucket help fill the foyer. Rachel Greathouse repurposed the old bucket as an umbrella stand. A rug and artwork add punches of color.

A painting from Amazon.com and an Indian bench made of rags and ribbons from Queen of Hearts Antiques and Interiors are bright additions to the foyer.

A reclaimed wood mirror that homeowner Rachel Greathouse found in Seaside, Florida, hangs over an Indian chest from Pier 1 Imports.

One of the ways Rachel Greathouse makes her home kid-friendly is by creating work stations for the children's arts and crafts. "Everything should have a place," she says. "We have a bunch of bins and things that keep them organized. They know where everything is then."

Dark woods and neutral tones mix with splashes of color from the red light fixture and a folk art painting to create a casual working environment.

Paintings and photographs create a personalized gallery wall. One of the items gives a shoutout to Milton.

Plush chairs by Lee Industries and a slipcovered couch from Arhaus line a rug from Alpha Rug Expo in Alpharetta. The rug is topped by a faux cowhide throw from Overstock.com. The folk art painting is by John "Cornbread" Anderson. The armoire is from High Point Market.

An assortment of chairs believed to be from England surround the handmade dining table. The ceiling's hue is Carnival by Sherwin-Williams. "We were trying to warm (the room) up," Rachel Greathouse says. "It felt like a huge ceiling."

To renovate the kitchen, Rachel Greathouse refinished the cabinets, painted the once-blue island and added trim. The stainless steel appliances, by KitchenAid, and light fixture over the island, from Progressive Lighting, also were added. She retained the backsplash and countertops.

This old church bench bought at Scott Antique Market brings a burst of green and additional seating, to their kitchen.

The desk was built into the wall for daughter Ashtyn's bedroom. The painted map of the United States leaves plenty of room to display her ribbons.

Side tables from Worldstock.com flank son Ryan's bed. The top half of the wall is painted Sherwin-Williams Naval, which brings out the blue tones of the plaid headboard, made from an old comforter. Sherwin-Williams Alabaster is on the paneling. Mom and designer Rachel Greathouse found the lion's head at A Classy Flea in Marietta.

The guest bedroom is decorated with a tufted headboard from Lamps Plus and an old cabinet door from a 1900s pharmacy. Rachel Greathouse repurposed the door by painting it and adding the monogram.

This horse, made out of license plates, was a flea market find. It reintroduces Rachel Greathouse's love of repurposing items and making them like new again.

The mirror above the bed is a flea market find. Rachel Greathouse used a interior designer trick by repainting it to match the wall to make it look architectural. The artwork and statue on the bedside table reflect her love of horses. The bed is from Macy's.

The horse picture, by Susan K. Friedland, above one of two fireplaces in the Milton home is called "Equis." Homeowner and designer Rachel Greathouse bought the chair while she was visiting Hilton Head, South Carolina.

A wood dresser enhances the farmhouse chic style that Rachel Greathouse has used to design her home. The bench, placed at the foot of the couple's bed, is from Macy's.

The tile that frames and lines the shower entry and walls existed when the Greathouse family bought the Milton home in 2010. To lighten up the rest of the bathroom, Rachel Greathouse ripped out the slate floor and added woodwork around the tub.

Designer Rachel Greathouse updated the porch floor with a diamond pattern using a whitewash technique.

Two swinging beds, custom made by Allie Small, are the focal point of this enclosed porch. They are perfect for the kids and their friends to crash on during a sleepover. Small pillows from Etsy and body pillows from Target decorate the room but don't distract from the natural beauty outdoors.

Adirondack chairs with pillows offer cozy seating on the back patio. The home sits on a hill in Milton.
