Writer’s opinions don’t belong in sports section

Michael Cunningham’s column in Feb. 29th’s Sports section, “Managers Lack Diversity,” decries the alleged lack of diversity within the ranks of Major League Baseball. He seems to believe that because there are many Hispanic players, there should be a corresponding ratio of Hispanic managers. This fits in with the current societal requirement that everyone gets a trophy, that promotions are given based on the number of participants, and that somehow everybody deserves a reward, even when they don’t. Soon after the Super Bowl, Cunningham’s column dealt with his perception that Peyton Manning had been given preferential treatment in the press over Cam Newton, who had reacted petulantly in postgame interviews. Although he did not specifically define this from a racial perspective, the implication was there. I chose to not respond to that column. But now, Cunningham appears to be on a roll regarding such issues, and I suspect we’ll see more from him on this in the future.

Cunningham’s columns belong in the Opinion section, because that is what they are … his opinions.

Heaven help us if we get Trump

Loud, insulting, confrontational, crass, crude, theatening, rude, intimidating, mean-spirited? In short, obnoxious. Looks like Republicans are getting an unexpected and unwanted surprise in this Donald Trump candidacy.

But what a sad commentary on the mentality of the voters in this primary season that they are favoring such a person to become the potential next president of the United States. It is unbelievable and heaven help our country if such a thing should come to pass.
