Don't put off that dream trip to Europe this year. Here are a few ways ways to find airfares under $1,000.
First, think beyond Atlanta.
Starting your trip from Chattanooga can save hundreds of dollars. For example, travel with Delta Air Lines from Chattanooga to Dublin, Ireland at a base rate of $318, or $716.80 including all taxes and fees. Round-trip rates originating in Atlanta are $1,067.80.
To qualify for this rate, give at least a three day advance purchase notice and depart the states by May 15. Rates are $15 higher each way for weekend travel. Stay a Saturday night or up to one month.
Another bargain rate to London, England of $216 round-trip is valid on departures from Greenville-Spartanburg, S.C. Trips must be started on or before May 22. Rates are $25 higher each way when travel falls on Thursday-Sunday. Give a one week advance purchase notice. Plan to stay one weekend to one month. Inclusive ticket prices are $763.20 (compare to $982.70 from Atlanta). United Airlines serves London via its Washington-Dulles hub airport.
It is extremely important to travel on each flight segment of your ticket. For instance, Delta's service from Chattanooga to Dublin is via Atlanta. Travelers must change aircraft in Atlanta for the nonstop flight to Ireland. But travelers, under no circumstances, will be allowed to start their trip from Atlanta. When you are a no-show in Chattanooga, all remaining flight segments are cancelled. No excuses such as flat tires or other woes will get you on that plane in Atlanta. And, an airline will not give you a refund for the cancelled trip. Naturally, this will also apply to deals that originate in Greenville and route through Atlanta.
Think outside the box when shopping for European airfares. Look to airline ticket consolidators for big savings. Consolidators negotiate ‘net' airfares and then pass on the savings to consumers at a low mark-up. For instance, Atlanta-based Consolidator Web Fares currently offers savings on major airline service from Atlanta to Europe during three departure seasons.
The lowest rates are valid on Oct. 20-Dec. 18 departures; shoulder season rates on departures now through May 22 or from Sept. 1-Oct. 19 and high season savings on May 23-Aug. 31 departures.
