Players knew if Rex Burkhead landed with Patriots ‘it was going to be trouble’

The New England Patriots have a special way of getting the most out of their players. The proof is in the pudding, and that’s why when the team managed to land running back Rex Burkhead, it turned the heads of quite a few people.

While Burkhead had shown glimpses of success during his time with the Cincinnati Bengals, he had never been a dominant running back. His best season came in 2016 when he tallied 344 receiving yards, 145 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

But even still, players knew that Burkhead had tremendous upside, and Patriots LB Marquis Flowers, who also played with Burkhead in Cincinnati, originally knew if New England got Burkhead, that it’d be trouble. As Flowers told Kevin Duffy of Mass Live, “it was going to be trouble.”

“Don’t let this guy get in the hands of a team like New England,” Flowers remembers thinking. “I was back there (in Cincinnati) saying it. This dude get into the hands of New England, that’s the only team that I thought —  that I knew — it was going to be trouble.”

“So when he went there, the league didn’t know yet, but we knew,” Flowers said. “I think everyone in Cincinnati knew what was going to happen this year.”

Burkhead has tallied 166 rushing yards and a score with 179 receiving yards and three additional touchdowns in his first season with the Patriots. He’s been an exceptional addition to the team, and while he only signed a one-year deal with the team, he could be an excellent long-term fit in New England.
