Patriots WR Chris Hogan is out, TE Martellus Bennett is questionable

The New England Patriots won’t have wide receiver Chris Hogan, but they may have tight end Martellus Bennett when they play the Denver Broncos.

“Here’s the Patriots’ injury report,” wrote Doug Kyed of NESN. “[Defensive tackle Malcom] Brown, [wide receiver Chris] Hogan and [offensive tackle Marcus] Cannon are out. Martellus Bennett is questionable with his shoulder injury.”

Bennett in particular has been vocal about his injury. He claims that he hurt his shoulder while he was with the Packers – he has a torn rotator cuff and labrum – and he wanted surgery. They wanted him to keep playing. They decided to cut him as a result. All of that is according to Bennett, not the team, as he released the statement on Instagram.

He later opened up a bit more about why he thought it happened.

“They panicked,” Bennett said, per Mark Daniels of the Providence Journal. “Thinking that I was trying to go on IR and be on their books next year. When I mentioned that I would possibly retire. So they tried to f-ck me before they thought I would f-ck them. This was all about money. All about money. I get it. But don’t lie homie. You knew what was up.”

“I had intentions of playing all 8 games as I mentioned in the post during the bye week, but found out it was worse than I felt after getting it checked out. Now I’m like f-ck it. I chose my health over the team. They chose money over me.”

There is one interesting part of this: If he was injured enough in Green Bay that he opted for surgery and didn’t want to play – which is fine, of course, if he’s hurt – he undercuts his own position by suiting up for the Patriots. It has already raised a number of questions, with many saying he essentially quit on the Packers when quarterback Aaron Rodgers got hurt but is happy to play with Tom Brady.

That may or may not be true, but it’s certainly going to come up a lot if he plays any more games this year.
