Giants coach Ben McAdoo won’t admit he’s not going to the playoffs

The New York Giants and coach Ben McAdoo have one win. They beat the Denver Broncos. They’re now 1-7, and they’re stuck in the same division as the Philadelphia Eagles, the team with the best record – at 8-1 – in the entire NFL.

That makes it fairly clear that the Giants aren’t going to the playoffs. Even if they rallied like crazy and won out, the best they could be is 9-7. That could get them a wildcard spot if everything fell their way. They’d need significant help, though. Plus, is a one-win team really going to win out?

Even with the writing on the wall, McAdoo isn’t ready to give up the dream. He was asked if it’s tough for him to take a team with no playoff hopes and inspire it to play well on Sundays.

“We’ve been eliminated?” McAdoo asked, per Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee.

“Pretty darn close,” said the reporter. Technically speaking, the Giants are not mathematically eliminated at this point.

“Yeah,” McAdoo said. “Well, I’m not ready to go without a fight, that’s for sure.”

Naturally, this is what a head coach has to say. He can’t very well say that it’s hard to inspire the team because everyone knows the season is over so they’re not even trying. That may be true, but it wouldn’t look good to those who decide if he keeps his job or not.

Plus, it may really be hard for him to swallow. When the Giants signed wide receiver Brandon Marshall before the season, there was talk that they could have one of the best passing attacks in the NFC. Now both Marshall and superstar Odell Beckham are out with injury. That’s not McAdoo’s fault, of course, but it means the high hopes before the season have really come crashing down.
