Denver Broncos players: Michael Crabtree sucker punched Chris Harris Jr.

Oakland Raiders wide receiver Michael Crabtree has a well-documented, contentious history with the Denver Broncos’ ‘No Fly Zone’ secondary – specifically with All-Pro cornerbacks Aqib Talib and Chris Harris Jr.

The last time Crabtree faced the Broncos (Week 17 of the 2016 season), Talib notoriously yanked a gold chain off his neck. And according to multiple Denver players, Crabtree went into Sunday’s matchup between the Broncos and Raiders looking for a fight.

On the play following the alleged sucker punch, a brawl broke out between Talib and Crabtree after the Broncos cornerback again yanked a gold chain off the Oakland receiver’s neck. Punches were thrown by both Talib and Crabtree, resulting in ejections for both players.

More than one Broncos player corroborated Harris’ claim, and knowing what kind of teammate Talib is, it’s not all that surprising that the former Kansas Jayhawk went after Crabtree.

“He was pretty calm,” safety Justin Simmons said about Talib’s emotions after the game (via Nicki Jhabvala of the Denver Post). “He was just upset that, one, Chris is the furthest from the dirtiest player. Chris is one of the most genuine guys I’ve ever met and he was walking off the field mad and pissed, looking at the sideline yelling. So you knew something was wrong. He said Crabtree had hit him, uppercutted him in his stomach on the way out. So Aqib took that personal. Aqib said he [Crabtree] tried to do the same thing to him. Obviously Aqib’s a little bit not as genuine as Chris when it comes to that type of stuff. He took it into his own hands.”

Second-year safety Will Parks added, “Listen, I’m blessed to be in a locker room with a guy like that [Talib]. For real.”

Suspensions and hefty fines are likely coming for both Talib and Crabtree. If the league finds evidence that Crabtree truly did sucker punch Harris, though, the former Texas Tech wide receiver could miss multiple games.
