Wisconsin-Virginia basketball preview

Wisconsin bounced back from three consecutive losses against ranked opponents with a 71-49 victory against Milwaukee on Friday.

Brad Davison has been phenomenal early in his Badgers career, and he was at it again Friday. Davison led all scorers with 19 points and buried 5 of 6 3-pointers. Ethan Happ continues to be a steady and reliable presence for Wisconsin. He finished with 14 points and 8 rebounds. Happ entered the game leading the Badgers with 19.0 points and 9.6 points per game.  Brevin Pritzl added 12 points, D’Mitrik Trice 10 points and Kobe King 8 points.

One of the major storylines to emerge from the game was that Wisconsin opted to burn the redshirt on freshman center Nate Reuvers because of the team’s lack of frontcourt production off the bench. Reuvers played 14 minutes and missed all 6 of his field-goal attempts, but he did grab 6 rebounds. His rise into the playing rotation will impact the minutes of Andy Van Vliet, Charlie Thomas and Alex Illikainen.

Wisconsin coach Greg Gard tried a new starting lineup for the first time during Wisconsin’s 72-70 loss Tuesday against UCLA in the third-place game of the Hall of Fame Classic in Kansas City, Mo. Brad Davison took Pritl’s place as the starting shooting guard, and redshirt freshman Aleem Ford started in place of Vliet at forward. It marked the first time Wisconsin started two freshmen since the 1997-98 season.

Virginia is off to a 6-0 start. The game Monday will mark the teams’ third meeting in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Wisconsin and Virginia last played in 2013, when the Badgers earned a 48-38 victory.

Virginia coach Tony Bennett is a Wisconsin native who starred at Green Bay (1988-1992) and coached at Wisconsin for four seasons (1999-2003) under his father, Dick Bennett, current Virginia assistant coach Brad Soderberg and former Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan. Tony Bennett and Gard served as assistant coaches under Ryan at Wisconsin from 2001-03.
