Wisconsin DE Alec James: ‘Shaq should have won an Oscar for his role in Kazaam’

After Wisconsin’s Alec James sacked Indiana quarterback Richard Lagow in the Badgers’ 45-17 win on Saturday, the senior defensive end delivered a unique — and hilarious — celebration by pretending to lick his fingers before rubbing his stomach.

When James joined the Big Ten Network’s Ngozi Ekeldeo for an interview on Thursday, James’ sack celebration was the first topic of discussion. James said the celebration was a nod to former NBA Star and current TNT analyst Shaquille O’Neal, who coined the term “barbecue chicken” on Inside the NBA as a way to describe one player dominating another.

“I’m just a big Shaquille O’Neal fan and he has a saying of ‘barbecue chicken alert,'” James said. “So I figured I would pay a little homage to him and do something fun for my teammates to get them excited.”

James didn’t stop there, though. He went as far to say that the 4-time NBA Champion should also have some hardware for his acting career.

“I’m a firm believer in the fact that Shaquille O’Neal should have won an Oscar for his role in Kazaam,” James said with a laugh. “It’s just an emotional roller coaster. It’s a great movie.”

Aside from his fandom for O’Neal, James has been a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks this season. James’ 5.5 sacks this season is second on the Badgers only to Garret Dooley, and fifth overall in the Big Ten. James stayed humble when asked about his personal success.

“I got to give a lot of credit to guys in the back end and other guys up front,” James said. “Without them covering in the back end and guys getting pressure, I wouldn’t be able to do what I’ve been able to do. A lot of credit goes out to them.”

James is a part of a Wisconsin defense that has recorded 31 sacks this season, which is fifth in the nation. James said that the closeness of the players on the team’s defensive line has contributed to their success.

“I would say we are probably the closest group on the team,” James said. ” … We all kind of new each other growing up in the same area. So it’s definitely good to have that camaraderie, and it helps you, especially in terms of playing, when you have guys you’ve known for a long time and guys you can trust.”

With the undefeated Badgers set to host Iowa for the Heartland Trophy on Saturday (3:30 p.m. ET on ABC) at Camp Randall Stadium, James said that it would mean “a lot” for the Badgers to win the rivalry game. The Hawkeyes have won four of the last five games between the teams in Madison, and James was on the team when Iowa won 10-6 in 2015.

“Anybody who comes to Madison or anybody we play away, obviously, our goal is to win the game,” James said. “I remember being on the team the last time, we lost 10-6 [at Camp Randall Stadium]. We definitely want to change that streak.”
