Who is Rodney Anderson? 5 things to know about Oklahoma’s running back

Rodney Anderson has emerged as the leading running back in the Oklahoma Sooners’ offense, and the redshirt sophomore is flourishing.

Here are five things you need to know about Anderson.

He’s leading a talented group of Oklahoma running backs.

Anderson isn’t the only outstanding talent in the Sooners’ backfield. Trey Sermon and Abdul Adams have both shown flashes of brilliance this season. But Anderson has claimed the statistical lead in every major category — rushes (138), yards (867) and rushing touchdowns (11). If you were to name a primary back for Oklahoma, Anderson would be the first name on the list.

He has championship-level experience.

If the Sooners make a run into the College Football Playoff, Anderson shouldn’t be fazed. While playing for Katy High School in Texas, Anderson was part of a team that made it to the 2014 6A Division II state title game. And, yes, that game was played inside AT&T Stadium, where the Big 12 Championship Game will be played. It’s safe to say Anderson won’t be nervous on the big stage Saturday when Oklahoma takes on TCU.

He dominated TCU in the first meeting.

The Horned Frogs most likely had nightmares of Rodney Anderson running through their heads after TCU and Oklahoma played in the regular season. Anderson was running all over them on the field, too, to the tune of 290 all-purpose yards and four total touchdowns. He’s decimated the Frogs’ defense before, and there’s no reason to think he can’t do it again.

He’s returning from an injury-plagued first two years.

Anderson received playing time as a freshman in 2015, playing in two games before suffering a season-ending leg injury against Tennessee. In 2016, a training camp injury forced him to miss the whole season. This is his first fully-healthy season with the Sooners, and he’s taking full advantage.

His stats hold up compared to the rest of the conference.

Anderson isn’t just the best running back on Oklahoma. It wouldn’t be out of line to call him the best back in the Big 12 Conference. He leads all qualifying running backs with 6.3 yards per carry, per sports-reference.com, and is second in rushing touchdowns. He was named to the All-Big 12 Second Team, behind David Montgomery of Iowa State and Justice Hill of Oklahoma State.
