Who is Quinten Dormady? 5 things to know about the Tennessee quarterback.

Quarterback Quinten Dormady is one of two QBs Volunteer fans can expect to see take the field tonight against Georgia Tech in Atlanta. The junior is in line for the most significant playing team he’s seen since joining the Tennessee program out of high school.

Here’s what you need to know about Dormady.

1. Dormady is a prototypical pocket passer

Standing 6-foot-4 and weighing over 220 pounds, Dormady undoubtedly looks the part behind center. That height gives him a nice field of vision from which to find Tennessee’s receivers. He may not be Josh Dobbs in terms of athleticism and playmaking ability, but Dormady displays excellent awareness while dropping back.

2. Dormady was highly regarded coming out of high school

Tennessee is the type of program who recruits nationally, and they went down into Texas to pluck Dormady out of Boerne High School. The 262nd-ranked prospect in the class of 2015, and the no. 11 pro-style quarterback. We’ll see on Monday if he’s able to live up to those lofty rankings.

3. Dormady has waited patiently for this opportunity

Since coming into the program in 2015, Dormady has served as a backup to Dobbs, and stuck with the program despite knowing that as long as Dobbs was healthy, he was unlikely to see the field. However, tonight’s game is his first opportunity to see that patience rewarded as he’ll have an opportunity to go out and win the starting job for good.

4. Dormady will split snaps with Jarrett Guarantano

While Dormady certainly has every intention of earning the Volunteers QB 1 role, he’ll be splitting those reps with freshman Jarrett Guarantano. Like Dormady, Guarantano is also a big, pro-style type of passer, though as a redshirt freshman, he’s yet to see the field in a game.

5. Unlike Guarantano, Dormady has game experience

This is perhaps Dormady’s biggest advantage over Guarantano at this time. While Guarantano may be Tennessee’s future at the QB position, we have not seen him throw a real pass yet. Dormady, meanwhile, has thrown 39 passes over the past two seasons. That is not to say that Dormady has seen everything out on the field, but that experience could be crucial as the Vols go up against a good Georgia Tech team.
