The winner of Saturday’s Oklahoma-TCU game is not only in the driver’s seat for a spot in the Big 12 title game, but also a spot in the College Football Playoff. Although the latter remains a goal for both teams, the loser will have to set its sights on a conference championship.
That’s why Oklahoma and TCU fans should root for Oklahoma State in its Saturday morning game against Iowa State. Should the Cowboys win, the loser between the Sooners and Horned Frogs would still control their own destiny for a spot in the title game. Because Iowa State beat both Oklahoma and TCU, the Cyclones hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over them. Should Iowa State finish tied with either team at 7-2 in conference play, the Cyclones would be put in the title game ahead of Oklahoma or TCU.
Of course, the more straightforward result for either team is to win Saturday, win its final two regular-season game and win the title game to make it into the playoff. But if Saturday night doesn’t go according to plan, Saturday morning might have a huge impact.
Oklahoma State, having lost to both TCU and Oklahoma, needs to win out and for the loser of Oklahoma-TCU to suffer another loss in its final two games. Iowa State, meanwhile, can win out and bump out Saturday’s loser in the case of a two-way tie.
Again, there’s a simpler method for the Sooners and Horned Frogs: win. But in a matchup of heavyweights, that’s easier said than done.
