Jim McElwain still optimistic

The No. 17 Florida Gators struggled to do anything on offense in their season-opening loss to No. 11 Michigan Wolverines, but Florida coach Jim McElwain is still optimistic heading into Week 2. He still supports offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier and said he is confident Florida’s freshman defenders will grow from the season-opening loss.

“I’ve seen what he can do. I’ve seen what he’s done,” McElwain said of Nussmeier. “And he’s a guy, he takes a lot of it personal and sometimes in this business that’s the way it is, whether it’s the quarterback, whether it’s the coordinator, whatever. That’s part of the gig. And yet also we’ve got to step up around him too and make sure we’re getting some things accomplished in some other spots.”

Marcus Spears blasts Florida on suspension

McElwain said Monday there was no update on the nine players suspended for alleged credit card fraud. SEC Network analyst Marcus Spears, however, blasted the Florida program last week for the suspensions. An excerpt:

“That lack of institutional control B.S. sometimes to me is so overrated,” Spears told SEC Country in Dallas. “Players really dictate the climate on a football team. Coaches can give their message … but when you’re talking about championship teams, teams that really play on a high level all the time, the players control that environment.
