What Urban Meyer said at his Week 1 press conference

It’s an accelerated game week for Ohio State, which kicks off its 2017 season on Thursday night at Indiana. Urban Meyer met with reporters Monday to discuss the opener.

Here are some of the biggest talking points from the Buckeyes head coach:

Bye-bye, beard

Urban Meyer’s beard is gone, much to the delight of his wife. That means summer is officially over. It’s football season.

On a conference game in the season opener

Ohio State’s 2017 opener is unlike most season openers. The Buckeyes are not only playing a true road game, they’re doing so in conference. Still, having a more veteran team than last year gives Meyer some relief.

“This is a whole different set of circumstances because it’s on the road in a Big Ten game,” he said. “But Billy Price is snapping the ball to J.T. Barrett as long as they’re healthy and that’s comforting.”

On the depth chart

Ohio State released its first depth chart of the season on Monday. Meyer answered a few questions about players who earned starting roles, including the right guard race between Branden Bowen and Matthew Burrell.

On having nine captains

Ohio State announced its nine captains for the 2017 season last week. While that might seem like a lot to some people, it makes sense to Meyer.

“That’s one of the greatest honors you can have,” he said. “Why take it from someone deserving?”
