Tennessee is looking to recapture its glory from the 1990s. Join us daily at SEC Country for the latest Tennessee recruiting news and notes on the next crop of Volunteers. Check out previous editions here . In this edition, we examine Tennessee’s chances to land defensive end prospect Azeez Ojulari with his commitment Thursday.
Azeez Ojulari, the sixth-best weak-side defensive end in the Class of 2018, will announce his college choice at 3 p.m. Thursday.
Tennessee has made his final eight, along with Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, Notre Dame and South Carolina.
Ojulari rates as a 4-star prospect and the No. 136 player in his class, according to the 247Sports composite rankings.
Ojulari plays for Marietta (Georgia) High School. In nine games last season, the 6-foot-4, 224-pound defensive end recorded 94 tackles, 10 for a loss, and 6 sacks.
The chances of the Vols landing Ojulari seem fairly grim. Staying in-state with Georgia appears to be the most likely outcome.
The 247Sports Crystal Ball has all eight predictions for Georgia on the final day of Ojulari’s recruitment.
The crystal balls aren’t always accurate, though. Tennessee coach Butch Jones has shown an ability to pull off surprise commitments, too. The Vols secured a commitment from safety Trey Dean on Aug. 2, which few people predicted.
Ojulari did attend Tennessee’s Orange Carpet Day on June 17, which made a positive impact on the recruits in attendance.
It would be a long shot, but Jones could pull off another big recruiting surprise.
What a commitment would mean
A commitment from Ojulari would solidify the Class of 2018 as the best defensive line recruiting haul in Tennessee history.
It’s easy to imagine that group leading a Tennessee defense that would help the Vols contend for SEC supremacy.
If Ojuari, chooses Georgia, however, it still could be a positive for the Vols. Defensive end Kayode Oladele has Tennessee and Georgia in his top 5 with Florida State, Auburn and Ole Miss.
Ojulari could take Oladele’s spot at Georgia, and assuming Ole Miss’ coaching situation hurts its chances, then Tennessee is in good shape.
