It’s crazy to think a tennis tournament several years ago might have determined whether LSU would have the player it named as its starting quarterback just a day ago.
However, that seemingly wacky statement couldn’t be any more true based on what Danny Etling told reporters on Wednesday.
The 6-foot-3, 215-pound senior from Terre Haute, Ind. described how a tennis tournament stood in the way of him dipping his feet into football while in fourth grade.

Etling is relishing the opportunity to be the LSU’s starter under center against BYU in Week 1 after beating out freshman Myles Brennan, who kept the battle close, per Ed Orgeron.
In 10 starts last season, Etling led the Tigers to a 7-3 record. He had back surgery after LSU’s spring game but was impressive in training camp.
