Oklahoma football coach Lincoln Riley knows exactly where he’d put Oklahoma City Thunder guard and defending NBA MVP Russell Westbrook on the football field.
Riley was asked during his coaches radio show what position he’d play Westbrook at if the Thunder star was added to the Sooners football team next season. Without hesitation, Riley said he’d put Westbrook at free safety.
“A guy like that, that is fearless, that can cover, has ball skills,” said Riley of why he’d put Westbrook at safety. “We’d sit there and play man free and put him about 20 yards deep, and just say see ball, go to ball, get ball.”

Westbrook has been phenomenal as the face of the Thunder franchise since Kevin Durant departed for the Golden State Warriors, and Oklahoma City has amped up its roster to give No. 0 more support this season.
If Westbrook ever gets bored of posterizing players twice his size or racking up triple-doubles, Riley seems to have a good idea of where he could thrive on the gridiron.
He already looks pretty solid in the red and white:
