WATCH: Joey Gatewood shows highlight ability in first-half of nationally televised game

Auburn quarterback commit Joey Gatewood took the national stage Saturday night in Cartersville, Ga., when Bartram Trail (Fla.) took on Cartersville (Ga.) and Trevor Lawrence, one of Gatewood’s most impressive signal-calling counterparts in the Class of 2018.

Lawrence put on a first-half clinic to put Cartersville out to a 38-17 lead at the half, but Gatewood made his presence felt throughout the first half, as well. Gatewood had to split possessions with fellow Bartram Trail quarterback Riley Smith — as has been the case the last two seasons — but Gatewood made the most of his opportunities.

His most impressive moments came on the ground. He finished the first have with nine carries for 85 yards and a 7-yard touchdown scamper. Gatewood flashed his best highlight on a long, pocket-evading run.

Gatewood did more than just excel in the run game.

The Auburn quarterback commit completed 5-of-7 passes for 64 yards, including a particularly poised sideline throw for 31-yards. Gatewood offered a quick pump fake before floating a pass to his wide receiver for his best pass-play gain in the game so far.

Gatewood & Co. trail at halftime, mostly due to Clemson commit Trevor Lawrence’s sensational first-half showing. Lawrence went 12-for-14 passing for 286 yards and 4 touchdown. Cartersville has scored one each of its six offensive possessions.

Gatewood has yet to see time at wide receiver despite only playing every-other possession at quarterback for Bartram Trail.

The second half of the game will air on ESPN News.
