When it comes to college hoops, North Carolina is one of the most well-known brands in the nation. A major reason for that is because of the late Dean Smith.

Smith began with the Tar Heels as an assistant from 1958-61 and then served as the head coach until 1997.

Along the way, Smith amassed 879 victories and captured two national championships (1982, 1993).

At UNC, Smith coached some of the game’s all-time greats such as: Michael Jordan, Larry Brown, James Worthy, Sam Perkins, Phil Ford, Bob McAdoo, Billy Cunningham, Kenny Smith, Walter Davis, Jerry Stackhouse, Antawn Jamison, Rick Fox, Vince Carter, Scott Williams and Rasheed Wallace.

Smith was the consummate collegiate coach, as 96.6% of his athletes received degrees under his watch.

Now the Wilson Library at UNC has debuted a collection in Smith’s honor that includes 12,000 items from Smith’s early years and post-basketball life.

A big part of the Smith collection is made up of newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, letters and other documents that his parents kept through the years.

Here’s video of the collection, which is one to the public:

“It tells us about Dean Smith as a person,” University Archivist Nicholas Graham said. “This kind of fills out the details in his biography and shows more about him as a person and his service after he finished coaching.”
