KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Butch Jones knows what Tennessee football is up against with the transitions taking place at key positions, many of which remain unsettled.
“We’re nowhere near where we need to be, in terms of being ready to play a football game,” Jones said at Sunday’s Media Day at Neyland Stadium. “Every practice has to count, every rep will be valuable.”
Jones put the Vols through some “situational football” on Saturday night at Neyland Stadium, aiming toward a scrimmage on Wednesday.
The quarterbacks expect to be live in the scrimmage, and many position battles could be decided.
“That’s where this week will be imperative,” Jones said, asked about paring down the rotations at receiver and running back.
“I’ve told them, we’re putting our identity on video, not just in terms of offense and defense, but also special teams.”
Jones said he’s not as concerned about Tennessee from a scheme standpoint at this stage of fall drills.
“I thought where our football team was at this point and time, we still need to focus on the fundamentals,” Jones said, “The execution, and being able to focus.”
