Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech will play on Satuday, November 11, 2017 in what will be one of the more intriguing ACC Coastal Division matchups of the weekend. Neither team is still alive in the ACC championship race, but both squads are looking to improve their positioning within the Coastal division.
This will be Virginia Tech’s second tough road trip in as many weeks. Last Saturday, the Hokies took on the undefeated Hurricanes in Miami and fell, 28-10. Making matters worse, Virginia Tech had a rough trip heading home following the game.
But the Hokies will be looking to get back on the winning track and finish the season on a high note. Virginia Tech can no longer win the ACC, but they can still finish the regular season with 10 wins and perhaps earn a bid to a New Year’s Six Bowl.
Georgia Tech is far better than what its 4-4 record indicates, but losers in the last two weeks, the Yellow Jackets are now in serious danger of missing a bowl game. After facing Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech finishes the season at Duke and then at home against No. 1 Georgia.

Virginia Tech preview, keys to the game for Georgia Tech game
In his second season in Blacksburg, Va., Justin Fuente came to Virginia Tech as an offensively gifted coach, but defense has been the key to the Hokies’ 7-2 start. Virginia Tech is ranked first in the ACC in scoring defense, total defense and rush defense.
Nationally, Virginia Tech is also ranked in the Top 20 in all three of those categories. The Hokies give up just 13.3 points per game, which is tied for fourth-best in the country.
Offensively, Virginia Tech is definitely more challenged, but Fuente does have senior playmaking wide receiver Cam Phillips. At the beginning of October, Phillips accounted for more than half of the Hokies offense. Other players have developed in the offense since then, but Phillips still leads the team with 58 receptions, 793 receiving yards, and 6 touchdowns.
Freshman quarterback Josh Jackson is also having a fine season. He has completed 62.4 percent of his passes for an average of 8.2 yards per attempt, which is fourth-best in the ACC. He also has 17 passing touchdowns versus 6 interceptions.
However, Jackson will have to rebound from a subpar performance against the opportunistic Miami defense last week. He threw for only 197 yards and 2 interceptions with no touchdowns against the Hurricanes. One key for the Hokies is to get their young quarterback back on track in another tough environment.
For Georgia Tech, it’s all about the option. Although they are helped by the fact they have far more rushing attempts than anybody else, the Yellow Jackets lead the ACC with 331.9 rushing yards per game. Georgia Tech is also second in the conference with a 5.5 yards per carry average.
Junior quarterback TaQuon Marshall has led the way with 870 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns this year, but Georgia Tech has received rushing contributions from numerous players. Nine different Yellow Jackets rushers have at least 15 carries and five of them are averaging more than 6.0 yards per attempt.
How well Georgia Tech can establish its option will decide the game. The Hokies allow 121.8 rushing yards per game, which is the 17th-fewest in the country.
