Virginia-Clemson basketball preview
The Cavaliers enter the contest at 18-1 on the season and 7-0 in ACC play. Clemson is 16-3 and holds a 5-2 record in league action.
Virginia is ranked second in the country and has the No. 1 defense in the nation, per KenPom. The Cavaliers’ previous two opponents have failed to crack 50 points. Clemson is having a solid season, but the Tigers just lost star forward Dante Grantham for the rest of the season with a torn ACL.
The Hoos have yet to lose a home game — their lone loss came at West Virginia. Virginia’s defense garners the most praise, but the Cavaliers have a bevy of 3-point snipers that have energized the offense. Kyle Guy, Devon Hall and Ty Jerome are all shooting better than 40 percent from distance. Guy leads the team in scoring at 15.3 points per game. Hall averages 12.6.
Clemson hasn’t reached the NCAA Tournament since 2011 and looked to be on its way to doing so before Grantham’s injury. It will be interesting to see how the Tigers fare without him. Grantham was averaging 14.2 points, 6.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game before his ACL tear.
Clemson has other scorers, but Grantham was likely its best all-around player. Marcquise Reed (16 points per game) and Shelton Mitchell (12.3) will have to carry a heavy burden against Virginia.
