USC-Colorado football preview

For all of the calls for USC coach Clay Helton’s job, for all of those who bash Trojan quarterback Sam Darnold for his unusually high turnover rate, for all of those who immediately succeed “USC” with “overrated!” it has been somehow easy to miss the fact that USC is the No. 11 team in the nation. It has been somehow easy to miss the fact that with a win in Boulder on Saturday afternoon, the Trojans will lock up the Pac-12 South and earn a bid to the conference championship.

It has been somehow easy to ignore the fact that the Trojans could very well be the best team on the West Coast.

Yet that is exactly the scenario USC finds itself with on Saturday. A win over a struggling Colorado team will send the Trojans to the Pac-12 title game, and though a playoff berth is unlikely, a conference championship is still well within reach.

All it will take is to beat a team that the Trojans have never once lost to.

Yes, that’s correct. USC has never lost to Colorado, winning 11 games in 11 tries, five of which have come in Boulder.

Boding especially well for the Trojans is the dichotomous paths each team is currently taking. USC was mercurial early — well, the Trojans still are, just less so — but has seemed to settle in after a shellacking at the hands of Notre Dame. In the two weeks since, USC has put up totals of 48 and 49, winning by 31 and 14 points over Arizona State and Arizona, respectively.

Colorado, meanwhile, is trending down, having lost five of its last seven, including a 41-30 loss at Arizona State a week ago. The Buffs once-stout defense has been breaking down at alarming rates, allowing 33 to Pac-12 bottom-feeder Oregon State and 41 to the Sun Devils.

Whether Colorado can keep up with the Trojans depends almost entirely on one factor: the run game. USC’s run defense has been its achilles heel all season long. It gave away a massive lead to Khalil Tate and the Wildcats a week ago, and it was on the ground that the Fighting Irish did their most damage. If Colorado’s Phillip Lindsay and mobile quarterback Steven Montez can get the run going, the Buffs have a chance.

But if Colorado digs a hole early and becomes reliant on an aerial attack, it spells danger for the Buffs, who need a win to attain bowl eligibility.
