UGA recruiting: Which commits plan to sign during the new early period?

Want to attack every day with the latest Georgia football recruiting info? That’s what the Intel will bring at least five days a week. The play sheet today calls for a quick study about the new early signing period.

Which commitments plan to sign early? Which ones still aren’t sure yet?

This seems like a good day to dive deep in terms of the new early signing period. That’s the new plan in place for the first time along this recruiting cycle.

It creates an additional signing period.

For those that couldn’t get enough signing days in their lives, there are now three additional days for the nation’s top talent to join their favored schools in the Bowl Subdivision.

Those are:

  • December 20-22, 2017
  • February 7, 2018

There are a few things to know about the new early period

  • Prospects who plan to enroll early can now use this date to sign instead of the financial aid form that had been prevalent in the past.
  • Recruits that do not wish to enroll early can still sign during the early period. They still will not have to report until the traditional summer semester time frame.
  • The new period basically offers an off-ramp from the recruiting timeline for those who are ready and see no need to draw things out until February.
  • The early period comes right after a dead period for recruiting that falls on Dec. 18. A potential storyline to watch out for will be the instant flip on the new early signing day. Prospects can change their path abruptly and not given the flipped school any chance to recover from a sudden de-commitment.

Which UGA commits will  sign during the early period?

Plans can always change. That said, DawgNation has surveyed the class of 2018 so far and came back with the following responses. These responses are all less than five days old.

Sign early? Enroll early? Will they be a Freshman All-American? (Just kidding about that last one.)

Player 247Sports Composite rank Sign early? Enroll early?
5-star QB Justin Fields No. 1 QB Undecided Undecided
5-star RB Zamir White No. 1 RB Yes Yes
4-star RB James Cook No. 3 RB Yes No

We can extrapolate the following from those findings:

No. of future Bulldogs who plan to sign early: 10 (with at least three undecideds)

No. of future Bulldogs who plan to enroll early: 4 (Justin Fields is still undecided)

The reality here is that the table provided above only addresses one half of the equation about signing early and then enrolling early.

There is also the matter of what several of UGA top targets also plan to do.

Which UGA recruiting targets plan to sign and enroll early?

That is another matter entirely. There will be other recruits that the Bulldogs are pursuing that also currently plan to sign and/or enroll early.

Here’s a look at some of the top targets and what their current plans are:
