Tim Tebow: Auburn quarterback Jarrett Stidham “would definitely be a Heisman candidate”

ATLANTA — Jarrett Stidham is turning into exactly what Auburn hoped when it pursued the former Baylor quarterback. The Texas, native has even earned high praise from former Heisman winner Tim Tebow.

“You know, going back and watching the film, not just the TV copy of him, especially probably the last four and a half, five games, he’s played really, really well,” Tebow said. “If he was playing like that the entire season, he would definitely be a Heisman candidate.”

Tebow, of course, has the experience to proclaim a bold statement like that after becoming the first sophomore to claim the prestigious award while playing for Urban Myer at Florida after the 2007 season. He came close to becoming only the second player to ever win the Heisman twice (the other being Ohio State’s Archie Griffin).

Stidham currently leads the SEC in completion percentage (68.5) and ranks third in total yards (2,682 yards) behind Missouri’s Drew Lock and Vanderbilt’s Kyle Shurmur. That’s a far cry from Week 2, when the quarterback was sacked 11 times by Clemson’s powerful defensive line.

Even with the slower start early in the fall, Tebow says Stidham has been one of the best in terms of finishing the season. That’s clear from the sophomore’s Iron Bowl debut, during which he totaled completed 21-of-28 passes (237 yards), rushed for 51 yards and added two scoring touchdowns while leading Auburn to an upset over No. 1 Alabama.

“He’s throwing the deep ball extremely well, he’s throwing the crossing routes, he’s putting it on the money,” Tebow said. “He’s throwing on the run really well. The way he’s been able to maneuver in the pocket he’s avoiding sacks. He’s getting big third downs with his legs. He’s really doing everything you want a quarterback to do right now. He’s going to have to do it in this game, too. Because I think (Lorenzo) Carter and (Davin) Bellamy, they’re going to be putting some pressure on him.”

Though Stidham’s had some help this season there’s no doubt that the newcomer’s growth and success has been a huge part of Auburn’s success.

“People say,  ‘What’s the biggest difference between when they weren’t doing well until now?'” Tebow said. “Well, yeah, there’s a better defensive line and some other things but the best thing is their gunslinger is frickin’ making plays. You can talk about a lot of other things, but that’s the biggest difference.”
