Ohio State is staying hot on the recruiting trail. Moments ago, 4-star wide receiver L’Christian Smith became the latest 2018 prospect to say yes to the Buckeyes. Smith chose the Buckeyes over Kentucky and Cincinnati shortly before his team’s first game of the 2017 season. Bill Kurelic and Bucknuts.com broke the story.
“Blue” is one of Ohio’s top overall prospects – the 247Sports.com composite rankings 119th-best player in the country – and at 6 feet 6 inches tall and 205 pounds, he’s a college-ready athlete right now. A Wayne (Huber Heights, Ohio) High School product, Smith was offered by the Buckeyes in March of 2016. Early on, it was expected that he’d be a quick-commit type of player, but slowed his process down while he explored his options and went back-and-forth with the idea of playing basketball and football in college.
Smith’s recruitment – at least relationship-wise with Ohio State – seemed to lose some steam as time dragged on. Questions about how the Buckeyes viewed him in their offense, as a wide receiver or a tight end, caused consternation and allowed other schools, most notably Kentucky, to make a major push for Smith.
In May, an important meeting between Urban Meyer and Smith’s family occurred. That trip to Ohio State cleared up most of the confusion Smith was feeling about the Buckeyes plans for him.
“I was real young when people first started talking to me about Ohio State,” Smith said. “Back then everyone talked about it like it was just a business there [at Ohio State]. When you’re a young kid, when someone tells you that stuff, like a coach ‘doesn’t care about his players,’ it can make you feel like you don’t want to go there.
“Now, I know that’s not true, since I’ve had the chance to sit down and talk to him — I talk to him every day, he’s texting me right now — he’s one of the greatest guys I’ve ever met. It’s an honor that he wants me as much as he does. As a recruit you have to sometimes see things for yourself because it’s not always what people tell you.”
Meyer also clarified how Ohio State saw Smith in their offense.
“He told me straight up, ‘You’re a wide receiver,’” Smith added. “If I do end up growing, then yeah, I’ll move to H-back. Right now, I’ve got a wide receiver body, I am a wide receiver. Urban Meyer has given me two paths, and those were the paths but right now, I’m a wide receiver.”
Now he’s the first receiver committed to Ohio State in the Class of 2018. Smith is the 17th total commitment for the Buckeyes’ No. 1-ranked recruiting class.
Land of 10 will have more on the commitment of Blue Smith shortly.
