Texas A&M football vs. UCLA football preview, keys to the game
- Who plays quarterback for Texas A&M?
Since the days of Johnny Manziel, the quarterback position for Texas A&M has been a rotating door for the Aggies. After Trevor Knight graduated last year, there are three contenders to replace him. Jake Hubenak has some experience as he’s started three games over the last two years, while true freshman Kellen Mond has a lot of potential and hype. But it’s actually the third candidate, redshirt freshman Nick Starkel, who is believed to be the favorite. Whoever ends up starting, they will have plenty of talented weapons, from All-SEC wide receiver Chirstian Kirk or running back Trayveon Williams.
2. Who gets after Josh Rosen?
The Aggies lost the No. 1 overall draft pick as Myles Garrett is now a member of the Cleveland Browns. They also lost senior defensive end Daeshon Hall to the NFL as well. While the Aggies do return a large chunk of their back 7, including safety Armani Watts, Texas A&M will need to find a way to pressure Josh Rosen, who some expect to be a top pick in this coming year’s NFL draft. Rosen is returning to action after missing the final six games of last year’s season with a shoulder injury. Against the Aggies last year, Rosen was 26 of 46 for 343 yards while tossing 1 touchdown and 3 interceptions.
3. Does Kevin Sumlin feel the heat?
Make no mistake about it, Kevin Sumlin needs to have a very strong season this year. Just about everybody, including his own athletic director have put him on the hot seat. He’s never won fewer than eight games in a season, but the last three years have ended with a Novemeber flameout and finishing record of 8-5. Texas A&M has been able to get off to strong starts, they’ve started the last three seasons 5-0, so we know Sumlin’s teams are always ready to start the season.
