After a crazy Sunday during which Tennessee appeared to have its new head coach, Vols athletic director John Currie issued a statement on Monday morning regarding the Greg Schiano situation.
Tennessee appeared close to announcing Schiano as its new coach, but backlash from fans, boosters and more caused the Vols to back out on the potential deal.
Currie addressed Schiano’s connection to Penn State in the statement, per Barrett Sallee of CBSSports.com.
“We carefully interviewed and vetted him, as we do candidates for all positions,” Currie said in the statement. “He received the highest recommendations for character, family values and commitment to academic achievement and student-athlete welfare from his current and former athletic directors, players, coaching colleagues and experienced media figures.”
However, Currie ended the statement with no clear answer to the Vols’ future.
“I am grateful for your patience as our search for the next leader for the Tennessee program continues, and I look forward to making that introduction soon,” Currie said in the statement.
Here’s Currie’s full statement below, per Sallee.
